an Instagram Reel can be up to 20 minutes long, and Instagram's Help Centre gives the same 20 minutes whether you record the clips in the app or select a video from your device, but it adds that reels over 3 minutes won't be recommended to new audiences. Reels ads have their own limits: up to 15 minutes when you build the ad in Ads Manager, and 90 seconds or less if you turn a reel into an ad with the Boost button.

that is three different answers to one question, plus a fourth for Stories. below is each limit with its source, what length actually earns its keep for ads and for organic posts, how the limit got here, and the one cut that fits Reels, TikTok and YouTube Shorts at once. Instagram changes these numbers often and its pages carry no dates, so everything here is as checked in November 2026.

every size, ratio, length and safe zone for Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and YouTube Shorts is on one page in the social media specs hub.

the short answer

  • organic reel: up to 20 minutes, recorded in one or several clips or uploaded.
  • reach beyond your followers: only reels of 3 minutes or less are recommended to new audiences.
  • Reels ad from Ads Manager: 0 seconds to 15 minutes.
  • boosted reel: 90 seconds or less, full-screen 9:16, no licensed music.
  • Instagram Story: up to 60 seconds per clip (longer videos split into several), gone after 24 hours unless you add it to a highlight.
Length limits on one axis, checked November 2026: an Instagram Reel can be posted at up to 20 minutes, but only reels up to 3 minutes are recommended to new audiences; Reels ads run to 15 minutes; a boosted reel must be 90 seconds or less; a story clip is 60 seconds before it splits; YouTube Shorts run to 3 minutes; TikTok In-Feed ads run to 10 minutes. how long can an Instagram Reel be?

Instagram's Help Centre article on recording a reel says you can record and edit videos up to 20 minutes, and that you can record one or several clips that add up to 20 minutes. the desktop steps on the same page select a video from your computer, and no separate upload limit is given, so 20 minutes is the ceiling either way.

the line that matters more sits underneath it: reels over 3 minutes won't be recommended to new audiences. a 20-minute reel is allowed, but it only reaches people who already follow you or come to your profile. for anyone posting to grow, 3 minutes is the practical maximum.

where Instagram disagrees with itself

Instagram's own Reels feature page still opens by promising multi-clip videos up to 3 minutes, then repeats the 20-minute figure further down. the Help Centre also says Reels isn't available to everyone yet, and some accounts can see reels but cannot record them. we found no Meta page saying which accounts get 20 minutes. if the app trims your upload, your account is on a shorter limit, and the length selector in your own camera is the final word.

Reels ads have different limits

there are two ways to put money behind a reel, and they do not share a limit.

  • Ads Manager: the Instagram Reels page of Meta's Ads Guide lists a video duration of 0 seconds to 15 minutes, in 9:16 at a recommended 1440×2560. the same page says ads can be up to 15 minutes "similar to organic Reels", which no longer matches the 20 minutes the Help Centre gives organic reels.
  • the Boost button: Instagram's boosting rules say a reel must be 90 seconds or less and full-screen 9:16 to be eligible. it also cannot use licensed music, face or camera effects, GIFs, product tags or interactive stickers, and cannot already have been shared to Facebook.

so a 2-minute reel that did well organically cannot be boosted. it can still run as an ad, but only by building one in Ads Manager. the full placement table, with file sizes and text limits, is in Meta ad specs.

what length works for ads

Meta does not publish a best length for Reels ads, and we would rather say that than invent one. what it does publish points short:

  • its general guidance on mobile video ads says to consider delivering your message in 15 seconds or less (the page is undated and predates Reels).
  • on Facebook Stories, a video of 15 seconds or less plays in full; on Instagram Stories, a video of 16 seconds or more may be split into up to three cards.
  • its Reels ads page credits 9:16 video with sound and key messages inside the safe zone with 34.5% lower cost per result than image ads, across 15 split tests. that is a finding about format, not length.

people running ads say much the same, in harder terms. from an r/RealEstatePhotography post telling photographers why their own ads were not landing clients:

"running ads with a 60 second video? You can’t expect to capture cold audience this way"

and from a tester comparing AI ad tools for Meta, on what a video ad has to do before length even matters:

"you have 1.5 seconds on mobile before someone scrolls. The first frame has to earn the next frame."

"even a 15-second ad has a job: problem - solution - proof - CTA."

there is a counter-case. people selling long-form AI tools argue that some formats need minutes, not seconds, and they are right that a short cap rules those formats out:

"a podcast ad runs two to three minutes"

that post was promoting a tool, so weigh it accordingly. the useful reading of both sides: the opening seconds decide whether anyone stays, and length should be whatever the format needs after that. for a cold audience, start with a short cut and add a longer one only once the short one has shown the angle works.

if the video is AI-made, there is one more reason to keep it short. one AI UGC operator put it this way:

"a 15 second reel survives small inconsistencies because the viewer has no time to register them."

what length works for organic reels

the only hard rule is the 3-minute recommendation limit above. when Instagram raised the limit to 3 minutes in January 2025, its creators blog said only that 90 seconds wasn't always enough to tell a story and that appetite for longer content was changing. it gave no figure for which length performs best, and nor does any Meta page we found.

the people asking are asking for exactly that number, and nobody official has given it. from a small Shopify shop testing AI video ads:

"what ad lengths or styles work best for supplement products like ours?"

the honest answer is to test it in your own account. keep organic reels under 3 minutes if you want them to reach new people, and under 90 seconds if you might want to boost them later.

how long do Instagram Stories last?

24 hours. Instagram's Help Centre says photos and videos shared to your story disappear from Feed, your profile and Direct after 24 hours, unless you add them as a highlight. they are kept in your private Stories archive unless you turn that off.

each story clip can be up to 60 seconds. Instagram's 2026 Stories guide says a longer video is split automatically into back-to-back clips so the whole thing plays. that is a different kind of limit from a reel's: a Story does not stop at 60 seconds, it just arrives in pieces, each a chance for the viewer to tap past.

the 24 hours shapes what creators charge, too. from a post on how influencer pay works:

"Stories normally pay less because they disappear after 24 hours, while Reels can be worth more because they have a better chance of reaching people outside your audience."

scheduling Stories, keeping them past 24 hours with Highlights, and story sizes are in the Instagram Stories guide.

how the limit got here

  • August 2020: Reels launched with 15-second multi-clip videos.
  • June 2022: raised to 90 seconds, up from 60 (dated in Meta's Japanese newsroom; we could not find the English post).
  • July 2022: Meta said videos under 15 minutes would be shared as reels, while only reels under 90 seconds could be recommended. the 15-minute Reels ad limit matches that era.
  • January 2025: US creators could publish reels up to 3 minutes in the Reels editor, and reels up to 3 minutes became eligible to be recommended to non-followers.
  • now: the Help Centre gives 20 minutes, with the 3-minute recommendation limit kept. we could not find the announcement that dates the 20-minute change.

so the 3-minute rule is still current, but its job has changed. it used to be the maximum length; now it is the maximum length Instagram will show to people who don't follow you.

one cut for Reels, TikTok and Shorts

the other vertical platforms set their limits in different places, but they overlap:

  • YouTube Shorts: a vertical or square video up to 3 minutes counts as a Short (raised from 60 seconds).
  • TikTok In-Feed ads: up to 10 minutes for a standard ad; Spark Ads, which run an organic post, have no duration restriction.
  • Instagram: 90 seconds to boost, 3 minutes to be recommended, 60 seconds per story clip.

a 9:16 video of 90 seconds or less fits all of them: boostable on Instagram, recommendable on Reels, a Short on YouTube and well inside TikTok's limit. for paid, cut two lengths from the same edit:

  1. a 15-second cut that plays whole on every Story and Reels placement, and is the one Meta's own guidance leans towards.
  2. a 30- to 60-second cut for the angle that needs a demonstration or a story, still under the 90-second boost limit and the 60-second story clip.

length is only half of reusing a cut. each platform covers a different part of the frame with buttons and captions, so keep text inside the box that is clear on all three, which the TikTok safe zones guide draws in pixels. the sizes and file limits for every Meta placement are in Meta ad specs.

if you make the video in Clear Cortex, the video studio exports 9:16 and lets you set each clip's length, so the short and the long cut can come out of one project.

the summary

  • a reel can be 20 minutes, recorded or uploaded, but only reels of 3 minutes or less are recommended to new audiences.
  • Reels ads run to 15 minutes in Ads Manager; a boosted reel must be 90 seconds or less.
  • a Story lasts 24 hours, and each clip is up to 60 seconds before Instagram splits it.
  • Meta gives no best length for Reels ads. its general advice is 15 seconds or less, and the first seconds decide whether anyone stays.
  • for one cut across Reels, TikTok and Shorts, keep it 9:16 and under 90 seconds, with a 15-second version for paid.
